The full diameter is left intact to create two flats on the nut which align the nut to the slot, and allow it to be indexed to the accessory as well as to the KeyMod slot. The angled face created is meant to interface with the chamfer on the backside of the KeyMod slot. The nut is stepped and the larger diameter end is chamfered around 270 degrees of its diameter. The slot is chamfered on the backside while the through hole is sized for clearance of a quick-detach sling swivel (approximately 3/8" diameter). The slot is distinctive with a larger diameter through-hole combined with a narrow slot. The KeyMod system consists of two parts: the KeyMod slot and the KeyMod nut. The KeyMod system allows a user to place MIL-STD-1913 rails wherever needed (even in the 45° positions at times). The goal is to eliminate the need for the rail to be fully outfitted with 1913 rails covering the entire handguard. The KeyMod system is intended to be used as a direct attachment method for firearm accessories such as flash light mounts, laser modules, sights, scope mounts, vertical grips, rail panels, hand stops, barricade supports, and many others. Another big difference was the drop testing, where M-LOK accessories remained attached 100% while the KeyMod accessories remained attached only 33% of the testing. The biggest differences came in the repeatability testing, where M-LOK came first with the least amount of MOA shift. When it comes to durability and handling, both systems pass with flying colors. They wanted to see which system was better in regards to its durability, drop handling, handling failure load, and repeatability, for the complete report LOOK HERE. Unlike the KeyMod, the M-LOK is not open sourced, but it is free licensed. The many polymer accessories in Magpul’s product showcase did not work well with the KeyMod, so the M-LOK system was born. Magpul created this design as they wanted a system that worked better with non-metal surfaces. They introduced this system to the market in 2014, and similar to the KeyMod, it allows a user to mount accessories directly. M-LOK stands for Modular Lock, and was created by Magpul Industries.
As you can probably guess, KeyMod gets its name from the keyhole shaped slots that it uses. You can even mount picatinny rails onto a handguard where you need as well. This system was designed so that any accessories could be mounted directly onto the rail, unlike the Picatinny that had to be attached to the handguard first. Their hope was to standardize the attachment system, and they even left it as an open source design in order to allow other companies to make rails and accessories. KeyMod was originally developed as a collaboration between Noveske Rifleworks and VLTOR Weapon Systems in 2012. Both the M-LOK and KeyMod systems have grown in popularity since their inception, but what are the differences between the two? And is one better than the other?
